Weekend Route: Odesa — Vylkove with Moncastro

A 5-day itinerary from historic Odesa to the Danube delta. What to see, where to stop, how long it takes, and where to stay along the way.

Some routes stay with you for a long time. Odesa to Vylkove is one of them. Three and a half hours by car, and you move from a busy port city — its architecture, its theatres, its food — into the complete silence of the Danube delta, where canals replace streets and the city skyline gives way to an endless sky over the biosphere reserve.

This route brings together two entirely different experiences of the Odesa region, and Moncastro lets you travel it in comfort at every stage. A bespoke boutique hotel in the heart of Odesa, and Ukraine's largest glamping site in Vylkove: two spaces in one network, two characters, one journey you won't forget.

Days 1–2. Odesa — a city you have to feel

Odesa isn't a city you can simply look at. You have to feel it: walk through the old courtyards where time seems to have stopped, eat in a restaurant overlooking the sea, watch the sun set from the Potemkin Stairs, and return to your own space in the centre of town.

The Moncastro Boutique Hotel was made for exactly this kind of introduction to Odesa — an intimate hotel of five bespoke rooms in the historic centre. Close to the Opera House, Derybasivska and the city's best restaurants, and yet entirely quiet: a private space that belongs only to you.

Every room at the boutique hotel has its own character and design. Vintage details, natural materials, original interiors — nothing here is accidental. Five rooms, five moods: from the attic ALTRO, with its play of light and view over the evening city, to the spacious VERDE suite, with its deep green calm and a private balcony over the historic centre.

What to see and where to go in Odesa

Day one — the city on foot. The Opera House, the Potemkin Stairs, Derybasivska, the old Odesa courtyards. Dinner at a restaurant serving Odesa cuisine — seafood, fresh fish, local wine.

Day two — Odesa by the sea. Lanzheron or Arkadia, the Pryvoz market in the morning, a walk down Frantsuzkyi Boulevard. The evening back in the centre, with a cocktail on a terrace overlooking the sea.

After two days in Odesa, set out for Vylkove. The road is part of the journey.

The Odesa–Vylkove route: what to know

The distance from Odesa to Vylkove is roughly 250 km — three to three and a half hours by car, depending on the route. There are two main options: via Izmail, or via Bolhrad. Both pass through the landscapes of the Odesa region — steppe, vineyards, and gradually the Danube delta with its distinctive nature.

Worth stopping at along the way:

Izmail — a city with a rich history on the bank of the Danube. A fortress, an embankment, and views over the river. A good place to break the drive and have lunch.

Kiliia — an old town on the Danube, one of the oldest in Ukraine. A distinctive atmosphere and river views.

The Danube delta — as you approach Vylkove the landscape begins to change. Reeds, canals, birds. You can already feel you're nearing somewhere unusual.

Practical notes for the drive

Leave in the morning, so you arrive at the glamping site by the 14:00 check-in and have the full day to settle. Fill up in Odesa or Izmail — petrol stations are sparse on the final stretch to Vylkove. Your navigation app may offer several routes; aim for Vylkove via Kiliia or via Izmail.

Days 3–5. Vylkove and Moncastro Glamping — water, nature, and a full stop

Vylkove greets you unlike anywhere else in Ukraine. There are no ordinary streets — only canals, which local people travel by boat. Trees lean over the water, ducks swim alongside the boats, and above it all sits a silence the city forgot long ago.

Moncastro Glamping is a few minutes from the centre of Vylkove, among the pine forest and forest lakes of the Danube Biosphere Reserve: 43 chalets across eight hectares of wild nature, and full infrastructure for a proper stay.

Day three — arrival and the first evening

Check-in from 14:00. The first thing worth doing after settling in is to step out onto your terrace and simply stand there a while. Pine forest or lake beyond the window, birds, silence, and air that is quite unlike anywhere else.

The first evening at Moncastro is made for getting to know the place slowly. A walk around the site, dinner in the lounge zone on the terrace over the lake — the bespoke menu from head chef Andrii Dromov includes local dishes, signature fish of the Danube delta, and a wide choice of drinks. Afterwards, the hot tub beneath the stars, or simply a hammock on your terrace.

Day four — the active day

The morning at Moncastro starts with breakfast, already included in your stay. After that, the day is yours.

If you want to be active: SUP boards or pedalos on the forest lake, fishing, bicycle or electric car hire to explore the eight hectares of the site. In the afternoon, the boat excursion through the canals of Vylkove is essential — an experience available nowhere else in Ukraine: narrow channels, shaded reed beds, houses standing directly over the water, and that particular calm found only here.

If you want to rest: the pool and a sun lounger from the morning, the lounge zone at midday, the hot tubs and sauna in the evening. For children: the eco-park with ponies, goats and birds, the children's pools and trampolines, the playground, and weekend entertainment.

In the evening, a BBQ beside your chalet — or a night in the lounge zone if you've landed on one of the regular music evenings: piano, saxophone, or a DJ set.

Day five — a morning at the sea, and departure

If you have one more day, set aside time for the sea. Fifteen minutes by car from the site is a beach with 600 metres of pale sand and water without the crowds. The combination of river, lake and sea in a single trip is what makes this route singular.

After a morning at the sea, return to the site, take a slow breakfast, and depart by 12:00.
